In 2005, I was diagnosed with leukemia, a blood cancer that threatened to end my life. It completely rocked my world — and then changed everything for the better.
Since I was a young professional, I’d been very successful in my work as an agronomic consultant in the golf course industry. My life WAS my work and it wasn’t uncommon for me to work 80 hours a week.
Because of all of that effort, I was living the good life — or so I thought. I was married, had two kids, two dogs, a big house, and nice cars. From the outside it looked like I had it all, but on the inside there was definitely something missing.
The relationships in my life were an absolute disaster. I had been married multiple times — each time to a wonderful woman. I wanted to be the responsible breadwinner, but my constant working took its toll on the relationships in my life. I rarely, if ever, went on vacations or did little else besides work.
